"Made from 100% Moscato d’Asti, and incredibly packaged with a fabulous label, the 2011 Rinaldi Moscato d’Asti “Bug Juice” is pure spring flowers, fresh pineapple, honeysuckle, peach and apricot, which all soar from the glass. With about 5% alcohol, it is a gloriously fresh Moscato fruit-bomb. Drink it over the next year. The good news is that there are about 5,000 cases of it imported to the United States, and importer Fran Kysela says that his favorite accompaniment to this wine is a big wedge of Gorgonzola cheese. Rinaldi made a 2011 “Bug Juice” Pink from 90% Moscato d’Asti and 10% Brachetto d’Acqui.
This is an addictive, light pink-colored, frothy rose that is quite low in alcohol, with deliciously sweet strawberry and cherry notes intermixed with hints of peach and apricot. Just stunning, there is much less of it available (800 cases). I can imagine that if you’re sitting by the pool on a hot summer day, this wine would be the perfect accompaniment.
Above all, wine is meant to bring people together, encourage conversation and be fun. If there’s a quintessential “fun wine,” it is certainly the sparkling, low-alcohol Moscatos made in Northern Italy. I jokingly refer to these as breakfast wines, but they are remarkably fresh, lively wines that rarely exceed 5 to 6% alcohol. Their aromatics are stunning, and no one does a better job making these wines than Rinaldi. There are three cuvees to contemplate." 89 point
