Languedoc-Roussillon

I have considerably underestimated the potential for Languedoc white wines and the number of these that are truly innovative and exciting. Many of the most striking, though, are produced in tiny quantities and have not yet been exported to the U.S., or only in insignificant numbers. Some of these stylistically diverse white wine successes are also notable for their reliance not on grapes introduced from the Northern Rhône or Southwest France, but on such once overlooked or even scorned long-time residents of Mediterranean France as Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Macabeu, Clairette, Carignan Blanc, Rolle, and Terret. (In this regard, the increasingly exciting whites of Roussillon should serve as an inspiration.)
